An independent Bayview School

The Rise Prep Vision

Rise University Preparatory is an independent Christian middle and high school making top quality education accessible to the Bayview/Hunters Point community and beyond.

Our academically rigorous, creative program and supportive, college-bound environment encourages students to thrive--to reason, imagine, serve and excel.

We follow a 9-to-5 school day model as a way to provide an immersive educational experience, close-knit community, and enrichment activities. Our partnerships with local businesses allow us to offer unique opportunities in project-based, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning.

We believe each and every person is a beloved child of God with God-given capacity to learn, lead and love, destined for friendship with God.

Rise Prep is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Our Educators

Founded by veteran educators from Redeemer Community Church with a common vision for a neighborhood school, and surrounded by a supportive array of friends and partners, Rise Prep is committed to equity and each child’s opportunity to flourish.

Our faculty was trained at leading universities including Stanford and Harvard. We’ve spent decades educating San Francisco Bay Area students through public and private schools, and we're firmly dedicated to a school that broadens opportunity in the community we call home.

Our Story

After more than a decade in the Bayview, in 2015, several members of Redeemer Community Church felt called to unify our extensive experience in education to help form an excellent neighborhood-based middle and high school. Like many of our neighbors, we had long lamented over the inequalities in our city, and we were excited about working together with God's love and strength towards His vision for this place.

We believe that with long-term commitment, personal care, and strong relationships with families and place, we can offer excellent educational opportunity to all. We hope the school can be an important neighborhood center, one that can help retain the gift of racial and socioeconomic diversity of the neighborhood and that can give back to the neighborhood we can all be proud of.

We're grateful for all the friends and community members who gave us encouragement, input, correction through the planning process, and who shared their dreams with us about what could be possible for our youth with the wealth of local resources and prayer.

In 2016 we were incorporated, and we ran our first summer program with programming, engineering, and digital media tracks. We had so much joy!

Now we're having so much fun with our 6th grade class and our 7th grade class, watching them persevere, stretch and grow. We'll add the next 6th grade class in 2019-20 and so on until we are a full 6th-12th grade preparatory. By spring 2024, we anticipate graduating our first high school class with 100% acceptance into four-year universities.

Throughout her time teaching, Mrs. Chien has also been devoted to youth through her local church congregation. For nearly 20 years she has served as a youth minister of Redeemer Community Church and its parent congregation, Grace Fellowship Community Church. Mr. Cahill comes to Rise Prep from teaching mathematics for eight years at the high school level-- six years at Alma Heights Christian and the last two years at American International in Accra, Ghana, West Africa. At Alma Heights, he served as a Mathematics Teacher, Student Council Advisor, and Mathematics Department Chair. In Accra, Ghana, he also served as the Mathematics Teacher and was appointed Lead Teacher for high school faculty.

Mr. Cahill is passionate about teaching, particularly in making the often-challenging subject of math accessible to all students. He views education as a platform to invest intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually in the lives of students for their future success. Outside of the classroom, he enjoys playing soccer, surfing, hiking and traveling. Experiencing other cultures has provided unique opportunities to learn and appreciate the differences of people and see the world from different perspectives.

Mr. Cahill graduated from California Baptist University with a B.S. in Mathematics and a cleared single subject California Teaching Credential in Mathematics. By June, he will also have completed his M.S. in Educational Leadership at CSU East Bay.

Mr. Cahill and his wife Chloe are looking forward to their move back home to the Bay Area in June 2017. In their two years abroad, they have learned and grown tremendously, but there is no place like home. They are excited to integrate themselves back into the community and reconnect with family, friends, and church community.
